Buzza Hill Entrance Grave

Take a stroll up St Mary's Buzza Hill (above Porthcressa beach), and you'll come across this solitary prehistoric entrance grave. These graves are a type of Neolithic and Bronze Age burial chamber that are found only in the Isles of Scilly and West Cornwall.

There were once four of these unusual burial chambers located around Buzza Hill: two were destroyed and the fourth, on Peninnis Hill, is separated from the Buzza grave by modern buildings (they would originally have been seen from one another).

This remaining grave (or cairn) is a round mound of rubble, with a central burial chamber reached by a passage (hence the name). The chamber is roofed by a massive capstone, around 2 meters long. From similar excavated sites, we know that the chamber would be a communal grave, where funerary urns would be placed.

The walk up Buzza Hill gives you some great views across Hugh Town and Porthcressa, as well as the chance to explore one of Scilly's ancient entrance graves.
