Pendeen lighthouse has been standing guard over this treacherous stretch of water since 1900. Off the coast of Pendeen are many submerged rocks and the high cliffs made it difficult for ships to navigate by sight here. Over the years prior to the lighthouse being built many ships came to grief on the rocks of Gurnard's Head just up the coast. Up until 1995 the lighthouse keepers and family would have lived in the accommodation around the base of the lighthouse. These days it is fully automated so there is no need.
